Did God give the law to Moses and to Moses the law was given through Moses and mankind? We human beings we came to know and to realize that God gave the law to Moses so that we human beings could come to know of his laws. Uh I want to talk about the basics or why did God really give us the law? Because today today`s Christianity today in our country Uganda also not only in Uganda in other countries all over the world there are so many people who think or who rely on the law of God thinking that God gave the law so that we could obey and keep it yet God didn`t give us the law to keep but he gave us the law to know what our sins are before him.
Behind me there is a uh there is a diagram an illustration of a true true nature of a human being. So all my uh all that I`m going to share about all my topic is going to be basically on the human nature and I want to talk about the human nature uh relating it or reading through the law of God and so that we could understand the true nature of humankind, your nature and my nature and how can we be delivered from our sinful self.
So why did God give the law and why did the Pharisees put aside the commandments of God and they hold to the traditions of men? First and foremost, the Pharisees never believed in God because they only honored God with their lips but their heart was far away from God. And that`s why the Lord Jesus Christ was grooved. He felt so hot and he saw that they were they were hypocrites. Why? Because these Pharisees were the people who were teaching people because at that time there are no schools. There are no places like today where you could go to a university where you could go somewhere and study. So they had to go to synagogues where they uh where they could sit and be taught.
But these Pharisees, they didn`t teach people exactly what the Lord will do and what the Lord had promised. They knew the scriptures. They knew the written word of God. If we read the Bible carefully, the Bible shows that they also knew that the Messiah will come to this earth who is none other than Jesus Christ. But they didn`t accept that Jesus Christ, the son of God, he came to this earth and delivered us from all our lifetime sins.
So why did God give us the law? First and foremost, when the Israelites were in slavery for 700 years in Egypt, God sent Moses so that he said uh through Moses he will deliver Israel from slavery. and he passed pledges to Pharaoh and he told him to let go of his people. But because Pharaoh his heart was hardened and he didn`t know his place that he`s just a creature and God is our creator and he he is his creator. He thought that he could stand against the power of God. That`s why God poured all the 10 pledges.
So as the Israelites were delivered from Egypt and they went into the wilderness of sin which is uh they went into the desert. The Israelites reached at the time that they were suffering of hunger, thirst but God would provide food and even he could provide the food from heaven. We see that he even uh he gave them water from the rock. If we read Exodus uh chapter 17, I`m sorry, my eyes can`t see well because of the light that is lightening in my eyes. So I need to Yeah, it`s uh Exodus chapter 17.
So the Israelites uh having forgotten the power of God and who brought them out from the slavery and from uh from the Egyptians. So what God did because they had forgotten him, his power as they were in the wilderness quarreling, telling Moses, "Why did you bring us out from from Egypt and you bring us into this wilderness where we are suffering, having no food, having no water, having nothing But the Israelites never knew the Jehovah God. That he was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And that God was the God of their forefathers who lived by faith. Because Abraham lived by faith. All the sons of Abraham lived by faith.
But now the uh the the children the descendants of Jacob after all God called him Israel. They reached at the time that they forgot the faith of their forefathers how they lived. So by forgetting the faith of their forefathers because we see that uh Joseph was unable to tr uh to pass the faith to even his children. So they forgot the faith that believes in the Jehovah God and that believes in the word in the in the written words of God as they are. So God had to bring them back to himself and he had to reveal to them how evil and what sins they are doing in his sight. So he called Moses to mountain Sai so that he could give him the law and he brings it to the children of Israel.
So as we witness uh the power of God in the book of Exodus, we see that even as God had descended from heaven to Mount Si, even the children of Israel, all the Israelites, they trembled because they saw they uh because of the thunder, the trumpet that was blown. And the Lord had warned them not to even go near the mountain or any living creature that any living creature or any human being who goes near the mountain shall surely die. So God gave them the law.
And when he gave the law, the Israelites at that moment, they had already started defiling and making them uh defiling God and making for themselves carved images. And they they were even making for themselves a a cuff and calling it a God. So God gave the law and the law he said that you shall have no other god before me because God himself is the one who delivered the children of Israel from the land of Egypt. So he told them you shall have no other god before me. But the Israelites had already made for themselves cuffed images because they had forgotten the true God.
So God had to give them the law so that they could realize their sins and return back to him to know that he is the true God. And whatever they have made for themselves, the go the golden calf isn`t a true God. It`s just a golden calf that made of man-made uh gold which uh the gold is made by God himself. And now the gold they`re making it as a god which doesn`t make any sense because it`s all from the world and he created the world. He created all all the living things we human beings and everyone living on this earth. Even the treasures that we treasure uh most of the people uh treasure in this world he is the one who created them. So there is no need for us to worship what he created.
So they even made images. That`s why he said you shall you he said that you shall you shall make uh you shall have my eyes are paining. You shall not make for yourself any curved image or anything uh in the heavens above or in the earth beneath or in the water or under the y. So here we see that the Lord say that you shall you shall you shall not make any carved image of anything of any likeness any likeness. Now the Israelites also came to realize that they made carved images of their own likeness. They realize that they were sinning in the sight of the triune God who created all of us human beings. They came to realize that oh we have had other gods instead of worshiping him the true god. That`s why they accepted the law.
And the Lord also told them that you shall uh you shall not call the name of your Lord God in vain because the Lord won`t uh the Lord won`t take you guiltless because you call his name in vain. So they came to also realize that they were calling the name of the Lord their God in vain. So God established the law so that the Israelites could realize their sins because the law is perfect and holy and righteous. But the Israelites came to realize that they were sinners, incapable human beings who violated the commandments of the Lord that he had given to Moses.
including we human beings, we too who are living in this age right now. None of us can keep any commandments of the Lord. That`s why God gave us his commandments so that we know we have the knowledge of our sins. But the Pharisees as we read the New Testament in Mark chapter 7, for them never knew why God gave the law to us human beings. So they laid aside the commandments of God and they hold the traditions judging sin based on the traditions instead of judging sin according to God`s law of his commandments.
We see that the Lord also said you shall keep the Sabbath day holy and we uh the the law of God says that on the Sabbath day nothing or no one should do anything because the Sabbath day is the day of the Lord. He said on in sixth day he created the the heavens and the earth and on the seventh day which was the Sabbath he rested. So this was the law and the commandments of God. I mean I won`t be able to mention them all but my main point to this God gave us his law so that we me and you could realize our sins that are recorded into the tablets of our heart inside of our heart and when I say the heart I don`t mean this physical heart that you touch and feel and it`s pumping.
No, my soul has a heart. So in my heart, that`s my soul. I was born and I had these sins, the 12 kinds of sins. So for me to know my sins very well and to know that I am very evil in God`s sight, God gave me the law. And the law was the only way for me to know that I am a sinner destined to go to hell. And the law cannot deliver me. But the law could only tutor me to bring me back to God.
That`s why the Israelites after God giving them his law of his commandments, they realized that they can they cannot keep the law but only rely on to what God gave them. And what was that? He gave them the sacrificial offering, the sacrificial system, and they could put and rely their whole faith into the sacrificial system believing that the Messiah would come in the same way. But the Pharisees didn`t understand and taught people a wrong way. And that`s why they judged the uh they judged Jesus`s disciples.
But if they knew the reason as to why God gave us the law, they wouldn`t have judged they wouldn`t have judged any of the disciples of Jesus. They would understand, oh, Jesus gave the law. Uh God gave us the law so that we could know our sins and Jesus came to deliver us because he`s our creator. He`s our God. But they only rebuked the disciples and Jesus called them hypocrites. Are you a hypocrite too? If you are a hypocrite relying on the commandments of men, the traditions that you are being taught instead of relying on God`s written word of God, then you are in big trouble because you are a hypocrite in the sight of God.
But luckily, you can be saved and come back to the knowledge of truth. How? By only listening to the word of God from those who have truly been born again of the water and the spirit.
