What is more important, the water or the Blood?

John 13:1-12.   Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Is-car’-i-ot, Simons son, to betray him, Jesus knowing that the father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded himself.  After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.  Then He came to Simon Peter, and Peter said to Him, Lord, are You washing my feet?  Jesus answered and said to him, What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.  Peter said to Him, You shall never wash my feet!  Jesus answered him, If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.  Simon Peter said to Him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!  Jesus said to him, He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.  For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, You are not all clean.

John 13:12.   So when He had washed their feet, taken his garments, and sat down again, He said to them, Do you know what I have done to you?

The truth is, unless you have truly been born again from this Water which Jesus used to wash the feet of his disciples, you can never receive the Holy Spirit from God.  Timing plays a major role in this act. Jesus performed this act when He did because He knew that His hour for betrayal had come.  When Jesus said, what I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this, what we must understand  is the fact that the blood of Jesus had not yet flowed at the time of this act, nor had He returned to the Father from where He could fulfill His promise to send down the Holy spirit.

John 14:26.   But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your rembrance all things that I said to you.

Today, if you are not using one of the adulterated Bibles, then the same teachings which Jesus gave to his disciples, He is also giving to you. But today, just as then, before we can understand, we must receive the Holy Spirit from God.  The Holy Spirit would remind the disciples of what Jesus had taught them, and the Holy Spirit will teach us exactly the same as was taught to the disciples of Jesus.  So, before we can understand just exactly what it was that Jesus was doing when He washed the feet of His disciples, we must have the indwelling of God’s Holy Spirit to teach us.  Notice that Jesus said now you do not understand, but you will.  It is God’s holy Spirit who teaches us the Spiritual way, but man can only teach from out of the 12 sins in his heart. ( Mark 7:20-23 )  It is these sins in the hearts of man which Satan has been manipulating causing them to make alterations to the Holy Scriptures, in his attempt to keep the truth hidden from the world.

Just as Jesus said to Peter, If I do not wash you, you have no part of me. The same applies to us today. If we are not, or will not be washed with this water from Jesus, then we also will have no part in the Kingdom of God.  Also if we allow Satan to deceive us, we would never become clean.

Just look at what our Lord is telling us, he who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but he is completely clean, and you are clean. But not all of you are clean.  Jesus is explaining to us here something which only a truly born again Christian can understand. Whoever has been washed by the water with which Jesus washes, is already clean.  When such a person falls by the wayside, and sins,  he only ever has to wash the dirt off the outside. The inside has already been cleansed. Once the inside ( the heart ) has been cleansed, the Holy Spirit can enter.  In other words, the Holy Spirit can only enter into a sinless heart, but once there, He is there to stay. Where the Holy Spirit dwells, there is no sin!

What is our Lord telling those of us who have bathed and become completely clean?

Jesus is telling us to be watchful, not everyone who claims to be born again, (clean) is who he says he is.  Everyone can wash themselves clean on the outside. This is only the same as whitewashing a filthy and cracked wall, it might look clean from the outside, but under the whitewash, it’s still filthy and cracked.  All you have to do is apply some water, and all will be revealed. This is exactly what is happening when we apply the water which Jesus used to wash the feet of his disciples to the self-professed born again Christians of today.  The outer covering just peels away, the cracks in their faith and the underlying filth will be revealed.

What are we learning here?  The self-professed born again Christians of today are trying to wash themselves clean with the blood of Jesus, and that this has made them clean. This is just the same as using whitewash to cover the filth and the cracks, it soon washes off and has to be re-covered.  This is called disguising the truth.  There is a vast difference between whitewash and the blood of Jesus.  You can purchase whitewash in any hardware store, and it doesn’t matter how thick you apply it, the filth and the cracks remain underneath.  The blood of Jesus cannot be purchased anywhere, in fact, the blood of Jesus is no more, Jesus shed His blood and died over 2000 years ago. So in reality, today, when people cover their sins with the imaginary blood of Jesus they do so in faith only. Only, here we have a problem, there can be no forgiveness of sin without the shedding of blood!

In the above scriptures, Jesus Himself told Peter in no uncertain terms, If I do not wash you with water, then you can have no part of Me!  Jesus was telling Peter that he was already clean.   Peter’s heart had already been cleansed, it had been made ready to receive the Holy Spirit when it would be  sent at a later date.   What then was the significance of the foot washing if it was not understood during the act, but would be understood later?

This is where only the truly born again of the Water and the Spirit have understanding of the water Jesus used to wash Peter’s feet.  Jesus was telling Peter, because his heart had already been cleansed to receive the Holy Spirit, he only had to wash away his daily and future sins with water.

In the O.T. the shedding of blood was the only way to receive forgiveness for sin. First it was for daily sins.  If you sinned you had to place your hands onto the head of the offer, transfer your sin, then shed the blood of the offer.  Then came the Day of Atonement, only on the tenth day of the seventh month, could the children of Israel receive forgiveness for their yearly sins.  Here the High priest placed his hands onto the head of the offer lamb and transferred all the sin of the children of Israel onto the offer, the blood flowed, was placed horns of, and sprinkled round the altar, thus completing the atonement for sin.  But still they continued to sin.

So, there remains only one question?  What was more important. Was it the altar or what was placed on the altar?  This is for you to decide, but there is one thing which you must be sure of before you make your decision.  Sin was always transferred onto the offer before the blood flowed and was placed on the altar. ( Leviticus 16. )

What then is the water which cleanses the heart, preparing it to receive the Holy Spirit. And what makes it more important than blood?  Remember, once cleansed with this water you become sinless.

Once cleansed with this water you can never again become a sinner, because the Holy Spirit of God dwells in your sinless heart.

John 1:29.   Behold, The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Matthew 3:13-15.    Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.

This is the moment that our Lord became the righteousness of God.  Thus it is fitting for US !

Here Jesus and John were working together, Jesus as the last offer lamb, and John as the last high priest from the line of Aaron.  When John baptized Jesus in the waters of the Jordan river, all the sin of the world was transferred onto the last offer lamb.  Just as the offer in Leviticus 16 was lead into the wilderness to die, so it was with our Lord.  Our Lord carried all the sins of the world with him from the moment they were transferred onto Him by the high priest in the waters of the Jordan. The sin of the world was taken to the last altar of offer three years later, the Cross, and here the price was paid for mankind in full with the blood of the last offer lamb.  Here it was finished. This was the last flowing of blood for the forgiveness of sin.   And this is the reason why Jesus was able to forgive the sins of many before He shed His blood.

So, where does this leave us?  There is no more offer to be made, there is no more blood to flow, there is no more forgiveness for sin, there is no more altar of offer, the Cross,  there is no more grave or rising, there is no more ascending to heaven, it has all been done, it is finished.

It leaves us with one thing and one thing only. The Water!

John13:12.   Do you know what I have done to you?

Jesus is telling us that He has already taken all our sin, including the filthy sins of our heart with which we were born, upon Himself in the waters of the Jordan with His baptism.  He is telling us that He will pay the price for our sins with His blood on the altar of offer, His Cross.  He is telling us that there is no more forgiveness possible, for without shedding blood there is no forgiving.  He is telling us that it is finished.  He is telling us that the old covenant has passed away and that the new has come.

Jesus is telling us that we have already been cleansed by the water of His baptism.  He is telling us through the washing of the feet of his disciples, that our flesh is weak, that we will stumble, we will sin, that Satan will tempt us, he will lie to us, he will try to convince us that we are still sinners who must beg for forgiveness.   But Jesus is telling us exactly the same as He told Peter, you are completely clean.   Now you do not understand, but later you will.

When the Holy Spirit descends onto someone today, it is only upon those who know the truth of the water, it is only onto those with a sinless heart, it is only onto those who believe in the truth behind the baptism of Jesus in the waters of the Jordan river.

Not all of you are clean !   Jesus is referring to those who have not been cleansed by the waters of the Jordan river. They are the ones who still have sins in their heart.  They are the ones who use the blood of Jesus as whitewash to cover their filthy cracks in their faith.  They are the ones who do not believe that Jesus has finished what he came to do. They are the ones who choose to have their sins covered instead of removed.

John13:12.   Do you know what I have done to you?      I have already cleansed you.  I took all your sins upon myself with My baptism by John in the waters of the Jordan river.  I have already paid the price for your sins with My blood on My altar.  I died and rose again.  I ascended into heaven and there I have kept my promise to you who believe in what I have done for you.

So why do you keep persecuting me?  Instead of begging me to come again and bleed for you, go and wash yourselves in the waters of the Jordan.

I am coming soon, make sure you are clean!  For I have already cleansed you.

John 8:32.   And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

The truth is: A truly born again has a sinless heart, he has been completely cleansed, but because his flesh is weak he will continue sinning until the day he dies. This is where the foot washing comes into play! We know we have been cleansed and we never have to ask for forgiveness for our daily and future sins, we only need to confess those sins and thank our Lord for already washing those sins away in the waters of the Jordan. Those who are not clean are the ones who think themselves to be above washing themselves daily, Satan has deceived them into believing that nothing they do is sin. If this is not the truth then why would Jesus tell us we only have to wash after we have been completely cleansed?

There is a wonderful book in the series from Rev. Paul C. Jong which explains this subject in greater detail.  Book No 54.  Be a Gospel witness who saves the human race from destruction.

Don’t let Satan deceive you any longer with his lies and deceit. For he knows exactly what Jesus has done for you.  He knows that you have already been cleansed on the inside.

God has blessed the world with His Gospel of the Water and the Spirit. Use this water to wash yourself clean.
