Subject 8 : The Holy Spirit
[8-15] You Can Receive The Holy Spirit and Be Dwelt by Him Only When You Know the Truth (John 8:31-36)

“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.’ They answered Him, ‘We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
What do we have to do in order to receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit?
We must believe in the beautiful gospel of the water and the Spirit and live by faith.

Do you know what the truth is? Jesus said, “I am the truth” (John 14:6). So knowing Jesus is to know the truth. Does the Holy Spirit dwell within you thanks to your belief in the beautiful gospel? You should recognize that Jesus’ baptism and His blood on the Cross are the personification of the beautiful gospel and believe in it.
People today frequently use the expression ‘born again.’ “People should be born again. Politics should be born again. Religion should be born again.” They use the phrase as a synonym for ‘improvement.’ However, being born again does not mean the improvement of the nature of flesh. To be born again means to receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit by hearing and believing in the beautiful gospel of the water and the Spirit.
What are the words of truth that allow us to be born again?
Why should man be born again? Man is incomplete, so he must receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in order to be born again as a child of God. We can see many people who believe in Jesus but don’t have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Nicodemus was a ruler of the Jews. Nicodemus, who appears in John chapter 3, was a leader of Judaism who tried to keep the law handed down by God. However, he was working as a leader of a religion of the people, unaware of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
In order to receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we must believe in the beautiful gospel of the water and the Holy Spirit and live by faith. Man can receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit only when he comes to believe in the words of truth in the beautiful gospel of the water and the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?” (John 3:12)
The beautiful gospel of the water and the Spirit is as follows. Our Lord was born in this world, was baptized by John at age 30, died on the Cross three years later, was resurrected and thus delivered us from all our sins. He became the Savior for those who believe that Jesus was baptized by John and rose again from the dead. He granted the remission of sins and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to those who believed in this beautiful gospel.
Those who still have sin in their hearts must be forgiven for their sins by believing in Jesus’ baptism and His blood. Man can’t help committing sins before God and so must be saved by accepting Jesus as his Savior. Jesus washed away all the sins of the world with the beautiful gospel of the water and the Spirit. All sinners can be saved by listening to and believing in the beautiful gospel of the water and the Spirit. Those who believe in this beautiful gospel are blessed with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up” (John 3:14). In the Old Testament, even though the people of Israel committed sins, were bitten by fiery serpents in the wilderness, and were dying desperately, many managed to live by looking at the bronze serpent set on a standard.
Likewise, we have got the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Jesus gives the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to those who believe in the beautiful gospel. Satan hinders us from knowing the beautiful gospel of the water and the Spirit and tries to block us from receiving the Spirit of truth. However, God blessed us with the forgiveness of sins and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit through our faith in the gospel of Jesus’ baptism and His blood.
You can also receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit if you believe in this beautiful gospel. Do you acknowledge this beautiful gospel as true before God? Do you believe that you are able to receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit by believing in this, the true gospel?
The Lord told us to know the truth that saves us from all our sins. “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). Do you know the truth of the beautiful gospel that saves us and blesses us with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit? If you accept this gospel, you will surely receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
