Subject 1: Being born again of water and the Spirit
1-31. Since God is gracious and compassionate, wouldn’t He consider us righteous, although we have sin in our hearts if we just believe in Jesus?
God is Love and also just. Hence, He judges sin uprightly no matter what. “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). This means that a sinner is destined to hell after being judged. He separates the righteous from sinners, just as He did the light from the darkness. God calls those, who have no sin by believing that Jesus washed away all their sins through His baptism and crucifixion, to be righteous.
However, those who still have sin in them, for not believing in the baptism of Jesus, are sinners in the presence of God. They are the ones who don’t believe in the water, in other words, the baptism of Jesus, just as the people of the days of Noah didn’t. If God considers sinners, who still have sin in them, righteous and sinless, then He must be lying and therefore cannot judge or reign all His creations.
He said, “I will not justify the wicked” (Exodus 23:7). The wicked are those who follow and depend more on the tradition of people, setting aside the gospel of the water and the Spirit, with which God has redeemed us from all our sins in the most just and fair way. Jesus said, “Of sin, because they do not believe in Me” (John 16:9). The only sin left on earth now is to not believe in the fact that Jesus has taken away all our sins through His baptism and the Cross, and has become our Savior. This is the sin of blaspheming against the Holy Spirit, which can never be forgiven. There is no other way at all for those who blaspheme against the Holy Spirit to be saved because they don’t believe that Jesus washed away all their sins.
The Apostle John said, “Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him” (1 John 3:4-6). It is committing lawlessness not to believe in the fact that Jesus has taken away all our sins through His baptism and the Cross. He shall reject those who commit such lawlessness on the last day.
Those who abide in Him have no sin and are united with Jesus by being baptized into Him. Those who have laid all the sins of their whole lives onto Him through their faiths in His baptism have no sin, even though they still sin because of the weaknesses of the flesh.
God calls those who have laid their sins on Jesus and have become sanctified by the law of the Spirit of life, to be righteous. He gives them the Holy Spirit as a gift. The Holy Spirit never comes upon those who have sin in their hearts. David said in his Psalm, “You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, nor shall evil dwell with You” (Psalms 5:4). The Holy Spirit of God never dwells in the hearts of those who have sin in them. Even a sinner who doesn’t have the Holy Spirit in him/her may say that he/she has been saved from sin, according to doctrines and his/her own thoughts. However, one can never say that one has no sin in his/her heart and is righteous with faith because his/her conscience smites him/her.
Therefore, such a person says that he/she is a sinner in the sight of other people, but actually thinks that he/she is a righteous person in the sight of God.
